What Is HCG?

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein hormone secreted by placental trophoblast cells during pregnancy. Structurally similar to luteinizing hormone (LH), it plays a critical role in maintaining corpus luteum function and progesterone production during early gestation. Beyond its physiological role in pregnancy, HCG has been developed as a therapeutic agent in reproductive medicine and endocrinology.

Mechanism of Action

HCG binds to LH/CG receptors on gonadal cells, stimulating steroidogenesis and promoting the secretion of sex hormones such as testosterone and progesterone. In males, HCG mimics LH activity, enhancing Leydig cell function and supporting spermatogenesis. In females, it sustains luteal function and ovulation induction. Its pharmacological activity extends to metabolic modulation, with investigational studies exploring potential effects on adipose tissue regulation and energy balance.

Research & Clinical Data

Clinically, HCG is FDA‑approved for use in fertility treatments, including ovulation induction in women and treatment of hypogonadism in men. It is also used in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) protocols. Research continues into its broader applications, including potential metabolic effects, though evidence remains inconclusive. HCG has also been misused in non‑approved weight loss regimens, a practice not supported by regulatory authorities.
